Europe / Dare / Electric Boys . The Roundhouse, London (UK) - 12 November 2016

Looking wonderfully cool as always Conny Bloom and the Electric Boys had a short but excellent set, including the crowd pleasers 'Electrified' and 'All Lips And Hips' and covers of 'Mary In The Mystery World', even a short burst of 'Whatever You Want' by Status Quo.

Throwing his guitar in the air and looking every bit like a headliner, hopefully Bloom and company will be back soon to do just that.

With some beautiful guitar to start, Dare have a powerful and clear sound. Again they get only six songs, but they play a mixture of mainly old but some new ('Home') and are clearly delighted that their new album has seen some success. Certainly the new song sounds every bit as good as the old and Darren Wharton's voice is still great.

But the night belongs to Europe and they give a consummately professional performance as always. Confident of the value of their new material, they perform 'War Of Kings' in its entirety, just to show us (if we needed telling) that every track is as good as each other. It does build up the anticipation for the big hits, the energy is kept high and the faithful never get tired of the microphone tossing, crouching and reaching of Joey Tempest, spectacular as he is still to look at. The crowd starts jumping during 'Days Of Rock And Roll' during which Tempest also plays guitar and gets the audience clapping.

He keeps the mood light by jokingly introducing "John Lennon on bass". Whirling his mike stand around five times like a windmill he is still a Rock God and his loyal audience would probably listen to him do a mammoth run of all of his albums one after the other, but such patience is not needed and against a video storyboard of an eighties computer coming alive, teletexting the fans a thank you message and teasing "here's to another thirty years" the crowd go mad pogoing to 'The Final Countdown' as an introduction to the greatest hits and second part of the show.

Songs like 'Rock The Night' and 'Ninja' are expertly rendered against a background of old photos of the band including with luminaries like Bon Jovi and Dio, loud and proud with their impressive barnets on display Tempest jokes that fortunately they never had any silly haircuts or spandex or anything like that. The crowd sways from side to side and obliges with loud singing during 'Carrie' while Superb guitar solos feature particularly in 'Danger On The Track' and 'Lovechaser'. Tempest does not forget to thank the crowd not only for coming out, but also for thirty wonderful years. We are then treated to a reprise of 'The Final Countdown' and the crowd go wild again to falling fireworks and that cartwheeling microphone.

All three bands were superb tonight! What great value for money! If only all the bands could have had longer sets (some of the innumerable Europe hits were not in the set such as 'Let The Good Times Rock' and 'Superstitious'), but that would definitely be being greedy!
