One hell of a show.

This is the second live album/DVD recorded at Prog Power U.S.A. by the wonderful Redemption. During its hour and a half time length, you will get to see one of the most talented Progressive Metal acts treading the boards today. That they do what they do with little or no visual gimmickry (only a few cinematic moments are used on a screen behind the band to help usher in the songs) speaks volumes for a band who are committed to just let their music do the talking. The music on the DVD and album are exactly the same, so I have opted to review from the DVD perspective.

After a short taped intro the band hit the stage and blast through a rousing rendition of 'Threads' and your struck at once by the guitar interplay of band leader Nick Van Dyk and Bernie Versailles, it's seamless and tight and the sound they conjure up is outstanding. When this formidable partnership can then be joined with the amazing bass and drum work of Sean Andrews and Chris Quirate, the keyboards of guest Anthony Paredes and the vocals of Fate's Warning vocalist Ray Alder, you know you're in for a real treat.

As I stated previously, there are no visual tricks so instead you get to witness a band playing some of the best Progressive Metal songs you'd ever want to hear... anywhere. So after 'Threads', you'll find songs such as 'The Suffocating Silence', the heavy as hell 'Dreams From The Pit', the melancholically emotional and dark 'Parker's Eyes', the highly melodic 'Nocturnal' (with its strong harmonic chorus) and my personal favourite (and what I believe to be one of the best Prog Metal songs ever written) 'Black & White World'. This song on its own could keep me entertained for years because to my old ears it has everything; strong melodic keyboards, powerful, emotion filled vocals, a rhythm section to die for and lead guitar work that is out of this world. The chorus all by itself deserves a place in Valhalla.

Summing up if you want to watch a DVD, shot with little or no bells and whistles, that has a great sound (5.1) and features a band that is on top of their musical game, whilst listening to a set of songs that all Prog Metal fans should want to hear then look no further than 'Live From The Pit'; it's one hell of a show.
