Making the music that they want whilst remaining original and true to themselves; for that they must be admired.

Often music is best reviewed by pigeon-holing it, categorising it and putting it into a nice tidy genre box that helps the reader to decide who else it might sound like before they buy it. That goes out of the window with Birmingham-based (U.K.) Captain Horizon and their second album 'Imitation Sun'.

In general, and it seems particularly pertinent in 2015, I've seen a huge rise in free thinking British bands who aren't afraid to experiment and come up with something that disposes of the bland and ordinary, choosing instead something far more original and exciting. With that in mind, it's almost impossible to allocate a genre to CH – a moniker that surely describes the band's attempt to steer their music away from calm waters and into something more choppy and unpredictable in the distance – as they manage to encompass (no pun intended) a whole plethora of genres, sub genres and soundscapes.

It can make for a difficult listen; opener 'Can't You See What I've Become' is an Alternative Progressive Rock song with elements of The Cult and Thin Lizzy permeating through the guitar work. Vocalist Steven "Whitty" Whittington's rasping growl brings a Graham Bonnet-like air to the proceedings, there's a welcome eclecticism running through songs like the U2-tinged 'The Dark' or the Progressive 'Sword'. Just when you think that you "get it", CH throw you a curve ball as on the gentle acoustic 'It Matters To You'.

Save for the slight commercial edge of 'Silence Of Vera', there's really nothing here to suggest that Captain Horizon will be troubling the U.K. singles chart anytime soon. But I suspect that they wouldn't have it any other way, feeling happier making the music that they want whilst remaining original and true to themselves; for that they must be admired.
