Gothic with an underlying modern undercurrent.

The Longing are a Female-Fronted five-piece from L.A. centered around founding member and singer Laura Bradley. In addition to Bradley the band consists of guitarists Yury Anisonyan and James Kloeppel, bassist Michael Wallace and drummer Tom Plumb. All are quoted as being formally trained, seasoned session and touring musicians with numerous high-profile production and engineering credits (though none are actually listed in the bio). The musical style is primarily Gothic with an underlying modern undercurrent and if I had to reference anyone it would probably be Evanescence. The bio references the likes of Stone Sour, Seether, Shinedown and Halestorm, but after a number of spins I'm still struggling to make even the slightest comparison to any of those artists.

I do like 'Bleed' but if I have one criticism it is that the material is rather one-paced and too many songs lack a strong identity, despite their overall appeal. Bradley has a good voice but one gets the impression that she is never really pushing herself. It is pleasant without being commanding and as such just fails in making good songs into really good songs.

If the opening duo of 'Wicked' and 'Bleed' had been injected with more energy they would have impacted much more. The tempo varies very little from track one to track thirteen (track ten 'Winter' aside as this does actually find a higher gear) but it is a sign of the quality that does actually exist that means it never really becomes a burden on the ears.

'Fade' contains a male Rap-like vocal that acts as a nice contrast and works well in the context of the song, whilst the stabbing riffs of 'Lips' offer an almost upbeat take on a more traditional Gothic musical framework. The hooks are generally immediate and it is difficult not to get caught up in the music despite any misgivings I may have outlined earlier.

'Words' is a song that borders on AOR at times during the verse and then the chorus that breaks down into the Gothic style during the bridge. The song also contains one of the few actual guitar solos on 'Bleed' and though it is only brief, it is still welcome. The album's mood is not overly dark but it is not quite uplifting enough to generate a happy feeling. The album comes to a close with a unique interpretation of the well-known standard 'Amazing Grace' but I'm not really sure how well it works.

The Longing seem to have performed in the main in and around California but I'm sure with right exposure they will attract more fans, especially if they can find a fan base in Europe where this kind of music is very popular.
