An absolute barnstormer that sees CB jumping to a whole new level.

In issue 53* I was handed the riotous third album from Crucified Barbara (‘The Midnight Chase’ which I concluded was “splendid”) and I’ve been a fan of the band ever since. It’s an album that I’ve played often and everyone I’ve recommended it to have been equally impressed.

Two years on, the all female, fearsome foursome from Sweden are back with their new album. For those that haven’t come across CB before, their style is a Hard Rock/Heavy Metal hybrid with devastating riffs, concussion inducing rhythms and powerful, throaty vocals. I have seen them described as a mixture of Metallica, Motorhead and Joan Jett and to be fair I can’t think of anything better myself.

‘In The Red’ refers to topping the levels when recording or using a mixing desk; it’s certainly an apt title. I don’t know about “red lining” but having listened to the album I am surprised they didn’t blow up the whole bloody studio. The bands lyrical content can be every bit as hard hitting as their music with their latest single ‘To Kill A Man’ highlighting rape and domestic violence whilst ‘The Ghost Inside’ discusses the pressure in society to fit in and conform.

‘...Red’ hits terminal velocity right from the off with the furious guitar and shouty chorus of opener ‘I Sell My Kids For Rock ‘N’ Roll’. ‘Don’t Call On Me’ is another entry with frantic guitar work, although the catchy chorus takes its foot off the gas a little before a cracking solo. Elsewhere there is stomping rhythm and bellowed chorus of ‘Finders Keepers’, the glorious whining lead and melody of ‘Do You Want Me’ as well as the slower chug of the aforementioned single ‘...Man’ where Mia ‘Coldheart’ Karlsson dials down the gravel in her choral vocals. My two absolute favourites are the “Classic” sounding, revolving riff and infectious chorus of ‘Electric Sky’ and the Hard Rock based ‘...Inside’.  The latter has another memorable chorus and some marvellous dual guitar.

As much as I loved ‘...Chase’, ‘...Red’ is an absolute barnstormer that sees CB jumping to a whole new level, one that also feels heavier overall due to incorporating a much “meatier” sound especially in the guitars; both Karlsson and Klara “Force” Ronnqvist Fors have conjured up a real maelstrom, while Karlsson’s vocal roar has more velocity than ever. So far, my list of nominees for “Album Of 2014” consists mostly of Symphonic Metal offerings, but with this album Crucified Barbara have taken an “18 wheel juggernaut” and smashed through the walls to gate crash the party. If you like your Metal with real fire and fury, you won’t find many better this year... ‘In The Red’ fecking Rocks big time!
