High calibre Melodic Rock, but with a contemporary techno edge

Liechtenstein would never be regarded as a hotbed for Rock music talent so it was with some trepidation that I slipped this album into the player. Etta Zero’s evolution began in 2000, when they were known as Downfall and primarily covering Pop songs (with a Rock format) but developing enough to write some of their own material. The band changed their name in October 2010 and started to record their debut album, finally completing the tracks at the end of 2012. By utilising both guitars and electro elements there is a degree of uniqueness about the sound, though it has been heard before, and after several spins there is certainly much to appreciate.

I do like the combination of big riffs and techno synth textures in the opening title track, similar in some ways to the ‘Underground Universe’ by Finnish band Renegade Five that surfaced five or six years ago. Mathias Nutt’s vocals lack a little range and power but I’ve heard many worse singers during recent reviews; in fact all the way through the vocals remind me of someone else and even now I still can’t bring anyone to mind. ‘Sorrow’ is a great Melodic Rock song with a memorable hook, powered by some hard hitting guitars and keyboards lifted straight from an AOR record. ‘All That I See’ has another meaty riff and is contrasted nicely by some understated keys and by this time I was warming to the vocals. ‘From The Ashes’ is an up-tempo heads down Rock track and features an anthemic “fists in the air” hook.

The song breaks down to a Pretty Maids style bridge and everything is once again under-pinned by some stabbing synths that add to the arrangement rather than intruding. ‘Heartbeats’ is apparently a cover of a song by a Swedish Pop duo called The Knife and acts as a link to Etta Zero’s origins as a synth-based Pop cover band. The lengthy ‘Heaven Is Closer’ brings the album to a conclusion and is in-effect a ten minute summarization of everything that has gone before. A Black Sabbath sized riff gets the song underway before the “pinker” and “fluffier” melodies kick in. There are some distinctly Abba-esque mid-section orchestrated keyboards before the breakdown into some starkly reflective piano passages.

‘The Last Of All Sunsets’ is by no means Progressive but there is plenty going on musically to keep interest levels high. It is certainly an album that I will return to on a regular basis and if you have a penchant for something that is high calibre Melodic Rock, but with a contemporary techno edge, then this ticks many boxes.
