If you are a fan of Def Leppard then it is certainly worth checking out.

This album really should be re-titled ‘Die Tough: A Tribute to Def Leppard’ as seven of the nine tracks on offer here are pure Leppard. Indeed, four of them really could be classed as remixes of several Leppard classics from the ‘Hysteria’ album, so close is their sound to the originals. Not that the band are trying to hide the fact as the first line of the sleeve notes states, “Loud Lion would like to thank Def Leppard, Mutt Lange and all the members of Def Leppard past and present.”

All songs, dating back to 2010, were produced by Bleu McAuley (guitar, keyboards) and Jon Fields (bass) and written by McAuley and various other members of LL with his main partner in crime being Taylor Locke (guitar). The rest of the band is made up of Robbie Royce (who, unsurprisingly, has a remarkably similar sounding voice to Joe Elliot), guitarists Adam Ross, Maclaine Diemer and Allison Robertson and Dylan Halacy (drums). Further contributors include Pat Badger, Eric Barao and JK Northrup who fully remastered the album in L.A. The sound is good and true to Sheffield’s finest but never quite matches the brilliance of the legendary Lange, but then, who does?

I think that if you are a fan of DL this will certainly put a smile on your face as all songs are brilliantly executed, even if, at times, some must come pretty close to infringing several copyright laws. The particular replica tracks in question are album opener ‘Love Will Break Your Heart’ (‘Pour Some Sugar On Me’), ‘Sunset Slip’ (‘Rocket’), ‘Die Tuff’ (‘Love Bites’) and the most blatant carbon copy ‘Lion’s Den’ (‘Women’).

The three other Leppard influenced tracks, that loosely can be called originals, are my personal favourites; ‘Lion Eyes’, ‘The Hills Have Eyes’ (from the movie of the same name) and the awesome ‘Dawn Of The Dead’ with its phenomenal harmony vocals.

‘Loud Lion Theme Song’ is the first of two shred-fests from Ross (Rihanna’s touring guitarist) that morphs briefly into an ‘Hysteria’-like tribute before returning to the million notes a minute. The final track on the album is another shred-fest ‘None More Fast’ that would not been out of place on a Tenacious D album.

To be honest I think that it is very clever how Loud Lion have paid tribute to one of the all-time greatest Rock bands. So, the album might be as original as an Essex girl’s handbag but if you are a fan of Def Leppard then it is certainly worth checking out. Let the feeding “frenzy” begin!
