I’m a little disappointed with this, especially after a nineteen year wait.

In 2012 it was announced that Italy’s Frontiers Records had signed Baltimore’s finest export, the band putting out a live CD through the label the same year. Two years on and the band’s long awaited studio album is appearing through a different label and, with a few reservations, it’s apparent that very little else has changed in the world of the quirkiest of all the AC/DC-influenced acts. Main song-writer Donnie Purdell may be long gone but his writing style remains in founding members Steve Whiteman (vocals), Brian “Damage” Forsythe and Ronnie “10/10” Younkins (guitars), Jimmy “Chocolate” Chalfant (drums) and current bassist Mark Schenker.

As with all of Kix’s previous albums there are the off-the-wall melodies and slightly naughty word play, the catchy ‘Tail On The Wag’ and latter day Alice Cooper strains of ‘Love Me With Your Top Down’ being cases in point, but the band can also lock into a groove and raise the maturity level, like on the slow burner ‘You’re Gone’ and the punchy earworm ‘All The Right Things’. Opener ‘Wheels In Motion’ is a great Rocker with a feel good vibe and Whiteman’s quick fire delivery; it’s so good that it should slot straight into the live set alongside the hits from their heyday.

Elsewhere I’m afraid it all gets a bit samey with the inevitable AC/DC vibe of ‘Rollin’ In Honey’ and the dreadfully average trio ‘Dirty Girls’, ‘Can’t Stop The Show’ and the title track. The ballad ‘Inside Outside’ doesn’t reach previous heights either and the band even plagiarize themselves with the “Midnite Dynamite”-like ‘Rock And Roll Showdown’, made even more obvious by the fact that the original is one of two live tracks that follow it, along with ‘Love Pollution’.

You can probably tell that I’m a little disappointed with this, especially after a nineteen year wait, and the dry production doesn’t help either, robbing the band of their trademark sharpness. However, there’s half of a good album here and I look forward to hearing some of those songs live at some point.
