Features more upbeat, catchy summer tracks than ever before.

Every so often, a band comes along and slots itself into the AOR world like it’s been there forever, with Sweden’s Work Of Art doing just that with the release of their debut album six years ago. Three years later, the superlative ‘In Progress’ took everything a bit further, filled with high energy songs, and right on cue we now have album number three in 2014, complete with “art” related pun title.

As before, WOA show that they know just how to kick off an album, this time with the incredible twosome of ‘Time To Let Go’ and ‘How Will I Know’, which are both instant attention grabbers guaranteed to have those in the know tapping their heads and wondering why the band aren’t a lot more famous. Lars Safsund is again in fine voice, and as before, he also manages to stick his keyboards in at every perfect opportunity, never taking anything away from the happiness inducing chords of Robert Sall.

‘Framework’ (a greatest hits album called ‘Gallery’ is inevitable, surely) is an album for the summer, in the best West Coast traditions, although WOA aren’t strictly a West Coast band, with an equal mix of pure AOR in there as well. Now I’ll be honest and say that I found that the previous albums tapered off a bit towards the end, but ‘Framework’ does no such thing. There’s eleven tracks, making it just about the right length, and to my delight the only wet ballad, ‘My Waking Dream’, is held off until last, although it’s still a rather a nice song. For those who like tradition, this album’s ‘song with a girl’s name’ is ‘Natalie’, and the ‘track that most sounds like Toto is ‘Hold On To Love’.

Work of Art have come out swinging with album number three which features more upbeat, catchy summer tracks than ever before, each one replete with catchy refrains and capable of instilling in the listener the urge to buy an open top sports car and move to the coast. ‘Framework’ is “wimpy” stuff, for sure, but so beautifully crafted it will appeal to Pop and Rock fans alike (although Extreme Metallers may need some convincing). If it weren’t such a horrendous cliché I would call it a work of art, so I won’t, but it’s certainly more fun than Tracy Emin’s unmade bed.
