A fiercely strong willed album that, like its voice, gives you everything whether you like it or not.
Well Hung Heart are the Californian Bluesome twosome that has been making a noise since their debut album ‘Young Enough To Know It All’ was released in 2011. But almost immediately, their sound found traction within the Rock community who waited with baited breath for latest album ‘Go Forth And Multiply’.
‘Young...’ was a smoothly produced raucous debut that found the line between Hard Rock and Blues and pounced on it. Of course what they have that differs to their closest musical allies in the Black Keys and maybe The White Stripes is a distinct female voice.
The key to liking WHH or not is likely to come down to a black and white view of vocalist Greta Valenti. Brash, gutsy and fragile at the same time, Valenti is all of these things. Shocking and loud in one breath, broken-hearted and weary the next – and she doesn’t care who knows it. Her heart is on her sleeve and it’s an ample sized organ at that. Swinging from effortless Blues on impossibly catchy opener ‘Big Plans’ to stomping tantrums on grizzled ‘Black Lightning’ it’s almost impossible to figure out which is the real her, but the beautifully played ‘I Was Made For Leaving’ is the wisest choice.
The fuzz has been amped up on Robin Davey’s guitars which detract from some simple, yet brilliantly worked songs. ‘Young...’ had a cleaner sound which made for a more sonically arresting album. This time it’s often a case of palm-muted verse and fuzz box chorus which has been done to death.
Overall it’s a fiercely strong willed album that, like its voice, gives you everything whether you like it or not.
