Constantine can become victims of their own ambition in trying to cram too much and over complicate a single track.

Finnish five-piece Constantine describe themselves as an Alternative Prog Rock Power Metal band. And whilst this is a pretty wide ranging definition, it's also a pretty accurate description of what's on offer here. It also defines what perhaps their weakness is in that the diversity of their ambitious album leaves us with plenty of good things on display, but little to achieve greatness.

They have been around since 2006 and this, their second full album, does have much going for it with intricate guitar work and an outstanding vocal performance from Lassi Vaaranen. Opener 'Dream Of Me' is full of time changes and segments – immaculately put together – but ultimately there's just so much going on in one song that there is no continuity, nothing to assure you that you are still listening to the same song eight minutes after the track starts. 'World Undefined' however is more straight forward Power Metal, a "standard" structure with an identifiable chorus, but there's still plenty of riffing and some great shredding lead guitar and it's all the better for it.

But there's nothing wrong with a bit of variety. 'Halo' has Vaaranen's powerful vocals over lone acoustic guitar before bass and drums come in to support the rhythm, but the simplicity of the track works so well. Title track 'Resign Due' is largely instrumental with some nice use of keyboards and even what sounds like a horns section and saxophone at one point. But again there are so many phases in one track that it loses any overall identity. 'Alice' is another Progressive, Melodic even, track that is full of emotion and evocative lyrics with excellent guitar work to match that builds to a full on Metal blast by the end.

I'm all for ambition and diversity across an album, and there really are some fine moments to 'Resign Due', but at the same time Constantine can become victims of their own ambition in trying to cram too much and over complicate a single track, thus losing the thread of recognition that every memorable song needs. This has faultless musical performances and impressive vocals but Constantine need to stick to writing songs, rather than pieces of music if they want to keep the listeners attention. When they do that, they excel... Progressive can be simple too.
