If you want to see a live maestro at work then grab yourself a copy of this excellent acoustic show.

Along with a couple of bands, Bryan Adams is responsible for turning my love of music into a passion. I have every release and been to pretty much every tour since 1992, but cooled on him a little after the last album which I found far too mellow. This opinion wasn't helped when he announced a 'Bare Bones' tour, although I had a great time during his last electric visit in 2011. As much as I love his songs I decided I didn't need another evening of chilled out versions and gave it a miss.

I thought this release presented an ideal opportunity to see what I missed so I snatched up the deluxe version. What you get is a 25 song DVD that's a retrospective of BA's career as well as a 22 song CD of the show. But rather than relaxed versions of old favourites the majority are all played at their original pace. The likes of 'Summer Of 69' and 'Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You', although stripped back, are played with gusto, allowing the crowd to be excitably involved. BA also rocks out during 'You've Been A Friend' and 'Can't Stop This Thing We Started', proving you don't need all that noisy guitar to have fun. All you need is a talented singer, a guitar and a damn fine tune. The ballads, as would be expected, are tender and heartfelt with 'Everything I Do' and 'Heaven' particularly well performed. BA even has a bit of fun during 'Please Forgive Me' by turning it into a Country ballad complete with accent. If there's one track to buy this for it has to be 'Cuts Like A Knife' which sees BA performing with a bagpiper supporting the main melody.

As a DVD of a show this is superb. The camera work is as intimate as the show but, unlike the majority of recent live DVD's, it doesn't jump around like a barefoot English tourist on a beach. There are some great action shots of BA who never seems to break into a sweat; he must be as cool as an Eskimo's greenhouse. There are also lots of crowd images which help the viewer get a feel of the atmosphere. The audio is crystal clear allowing every acoustic note and raspy vocal to shine. BA still sounds pretty good and his voice hasn't lost much over the years. The CD is much the same with a quality recording of the night. Whilst this may not be BA with balls and bluster, it's still a superb performance from a real showman and this release is a prime example of what a fabulous musician he is, with or without electrics. He's a genuine, understated and often underrated artist who really knows how to work a crowd and it's all on display here with BA as 'naked' as you'll see any performer. If you want to see a live maestro at work then grab yourself a copy of this excellent acoustic show.
