A legendary band in top form and a piece of rock history.

A timely companion piece to the Dio 'Finding The Sacred Heart' concert DVD is this one, sure to have many classic rockers drooling – Rainbow live in Munich, 1977. Featuring a powerhouse line-up of guitar maestro Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, the late, great Ronnie James Dio on vocals, the equally late, great Cozy Powell on drums, Bob Daisley on bass and David Stone on keyboards, this is a rare chance to watch a full concert featuring Blackmore, Dio and Powell all together in full flight. While Daisley and Stone never really got their due as Rainbow members, both of them contribute immeasurably to this excellent show. Stone's keyboard work is high calibre and Daisley contributes not only strong bass lines, but competent backing vocals too.

Blackmore and Dio are naturally the focal points, kicking off with a ferocious 'Kill The King' before the band immediately launch into 'Mistreated'. Dio does a superb job with a song so closely associated with David Coverdale, before 'Sixteenth Century Greensleeves' takes pride of place – who knew then that this was an indication of where Ritchie Blackmore was going musically? 'Catch The Rainbow' highlights Ronnie's ability to sing beautifully before the band launch into the title track from their (forthcoming at the time) album 'Long Live Rock 'N' Roll'.

'Man On The Silver Mountain' is awesome, as is the pulsating rendition of 'Still I'm Sad' before the 'Rising' cut 'Do You Close Your Eyes' ends the show. Visually, other than the huge rainbow spanning the stage, there are no special effects, just five guys playing their hearts out. The emphasis is in playing – a two hour show only includes nine songs. If you like seeing Blackmore stretch out and improvise then you'll probably have no problem with that, but for me, I don't need 'Do You Close Your Eyes' to be fifteen minutes long when 'Stargazer' can't get into the set.

That gripe aside, it's a legendary band in top form and a piece of rock history. You can have it on DVD or get the audio on CD or vinyl. Any option is a worthwhile investment.
