This eye-opening documentary is a warts-and-all story of the bands history.

Though they orchestrated some of the finest vocal harmonies ever recorded, the harmony within the Eagles band members was anything but. This eye-opening documentary is a warts-and-all story of the bands history, with all members past and present giving their side of the story, along with contributions from collaborators like Jackson Browne and J.D. Souther, and input from management, producers and record label executives. There's also some amazing archive footage throughout, and though it doesn't always paint a pretty picture, it's a wonderful journey through the life of this most beloved of bands.

Part 1 is the story of the bands inception as Linda Ronstadt's backing band in the early seventies, through the excesses of the decade, and the frictions that would surface and ultimately drive the band apart in 1980. Much time is rightly given to the early years, and how Glenn Frey and Don Henley began their musical partnership, and goes into great detail regarding the writing and recording of the first two albums, but then seems to gloss over the 'On The Border' and 'One Of These Nights' albums, which is arguably the period when the Eagles sound developed from Country Rock to the harder and more commercial direction that transformed them into global megastars. But then 'Hotel California' and 'The Long Run' are covered in more detail, along with the tensions that divided the band, most notably Frey and Don Felder, culminating in a revealing on-stage argument caught on tape by sound engineer Bill Scymzyk, that understandably marked the end of the band.

Part 2 covers Henley and Frey's successful solo careers through to the 'Long Road Out Of Eden' album, and reveals the factors that led up to the 1994 reunion, though it would seem that some of the problems of old would simply not go away, and inevitably Don Felder would be the casualty. It doesn't point the finger at just who exactly was in the wrong (if anybody), but wisely allows the viewer to draw their own conclusions.

I must recommend the Deluxe 3-Disc version, not just for the stunning packaging and accompanying photo-book, but for the excellent re-mastered 1977 live performance, when the Eagles truly were top of their game. Granted, it's not the full show (the DVD is sure to appear at some point), but is still well worth its inclusion, with Joe Walsh's 'Rocky Mountain Way' and Randy Meisner's stunning rendition of 'Take It To The Limit' obvious highlights. As rightly pointed out during the documentary, it's easy to see why 'Their Greatest Hits' would be the biggest selling album of the 20th century.
