A welcome breath of fresh air that will delight any self respecting fan of the sleaze rock genre.

Why is no one in a sleaze rock band ever called Barry? Seriously, I get a little fed up of the silly names and the fact that way too many of the people involved think that having the word 'Roxx' in your fake name is big, clever or remotely original. This was the first thing that annoyed me about King Lizard (step forward vocalist Flash Roxx Sawyer), but amazingly it was also the only thing that annoyed me about King Lizard. King Lizard, you see, is a very, very good sleaze rock band.

First up, I love the comic art cover (a great Matt Dixon piece), a nice change from some of the horribly embarrassing sleaze covers I've had to endure recently. It made me want to play the CD, not wipe the sleeve with disinfectant. At first, King Lizard come across as an above average hairspray and pout band, wholly entertaining if not exceptional. The thing is, as you push through the twelve tracks they just get better, with Flashy's vocals merging with the music and serious ass being kicked throughout. They've been touted (quietly) as the 'Spiritual Sons of Guns N' Roses', and to be honest Axl Rose can only dream of writing such catchy, attitude fuelled skanky tunes as are present here.

'I Can't Be Your Lover' would suit him (when he could still sing and turn up on time), but be thankful that Mr Sawyer can scream with the best of them and banish Rose to the Burger King drive thru window once more. Sleaze is impressive and fun when done right, and King Lizard do a great many things right, even managing to get away with songs that pass the five and six minute mark, with the whole thing livened up by some truly impressive guitar work from Niro Knox (real name Barry Smith, possibly).

King Lizard don't break down any barriers, and I can't think that they would want to, really. They want to have a good time with songs that are designed to be danced to. With so much substandard or just plain lazy gutter rock acts stinking up the market, King Lizard are a welcome breath of fresh air that will delight any self respecting fan of the genre.
