This is AC/DC, but no copy.

This is a Bon Scott banquet. An unsigned British quartet, currently paying those dues and gigging far and wide. With AC/DC on the van radio, because that is the basis here. That or Rose Tattoo. We can also mention Airbourne, other young lovers, but this has less of the whooping enjoyment of those gents and more of the spit and sawdust of Hard Rock. Of course, to be so close to AC/DC and be a celebration, not a copy, is even harder, the stakes are higher, the songs have to be stupendous; amazingly, Big Num manage it.

You will get a tone which you will recognise, you will get Beau Boston sounding uncannily like Bon Scott, you will get riffs from brother Luke which stir memories, but they put it together so well, deliver it without any irony, that it is impeccable. So the opener ‘It's Only Conversation’ takes sandpaper to an already stubbly riff and nails the beat to the floor but twangs away in an almost Country way, whilst ‘Vital Part You're Missing’ doesn't suffer from any absence, its beautiful simplicity allowing a throbbing bass and swaggering riff into a an airless room, before a blazing solo kicks the door in to allow us to breathe again. And then we get ‘Too Clever For Words’, which to be a hack about it, may be their ‘Big Balls’, Beau reeling off a narrative list of historical figures who are well-known widebrows, a brilliantly fun and entertaining diversion. And ‘Fallout On The Radio’ is the best thing here, giving us exactly the ringing riff we love from the awesome Antipodeans with a rising, soaring solo and soft scoop middle, but shoehorning in a Glammy, shout-along chorus which stays with you for days.

And then they stop and look at each other until someone says that that’s great, but it isn't it a bit, you know, samey? And so...’Favourite Gun’ sticks out like an open mind at a UKIP meeting, with a downbeat feel showing how serious this Blues gumbo is, dirty and a little musty, but really offering nothing to the rascally rock; neither does the attempt at PsychRockabilly which all the ringing warped Chuck Berry-isms of ‘Send My Love’ cannot deliver.

Don't worry though, they push us out of the door with a kick to the arse called ‘Twilight House’, a place bedecked with scarves, smeared with eye liner and stinking of Ellnet – it has a woozy, boozy, Glam feel as the rising power of the solo joins with the massed voices of comrades in arms. Ideal.

Big Num are unsigned. Surely that won't last. This is AC/DC, but no copy; it tries to match them and almost succeeds. What an amazing statement. Big Num(bers) are coming.
