Skin, live at O2 Academy, Islington - 7th December 2009

2009 turned out to be a great year for surprises none more so than the announcement that after 11 years “Skin” were going to reform for the Download festival, me like many others never saw this coming, no one had a clue. Fast forward 6 months and the group are into their second night of a short UK tour and judging by the reasonable turn out on a weeknight with the weather being grim beyond words this was proof that the band had not been forgotten. “The Only One” and the heavy “Spit on You” got the crowd onside and the bands faces were just lapping it up with Myke Gray peeling off some feisty fretwork, and Neville Mcdonald showing why he is up there with the best blues / rock singers EVER. What a travesty that this man has been out the limelight for over 10 years, give him a copy of the yellow pages and he could sing the bloody thing. All 3 studio albums were covered tonight with “House Of Love” and “Colourblind” from the debut being crowd favorites. “Reunited” from their recently released acoustic album just about tipped the scales as ok, but in all honesty everyone was there for the likes of “Look But Don’t Touch” and the sing along section which has to be one of the best crowd join ins that any band could wish for. Nice guy Andy Robbins was all over the stage and went pretty insane with “Take Me Down To The River” with his poor bass wrapped round his neck trying to keep up with him. No set would be complete without “Tower Of Strength” and just for good measure they added on at the end “Listening To You” by “The Who”. A great comeback to London from a group that should never have gone away in the first place.
