Beth Hart knows how to deliver a performance that is exciting, emotional and joyous to watch all at the same time and it was an absolute thrill to have witnessed it.

BETH HART, ARIELLE
Bath : Forum – 03 November 2021
The Forum is a charming Grade II listed building that had been turned into a cinema. It closed in 1969 and then subsequently re-opened as a theatre.

The support act was Arielle; an American singer/songwriter who performed solo. She opened her set with 'Beautiful Rain'; a number played on an acoustic guitar that she had nicknamed Cali. Her voice is beautiful and her vocal range outstanding. She then swapped over to her Two-Tone guitar that she designed with Brian May to perform a very jazzy 'Devil's Disguise'. There then followed the highlight of her set; 'Moon River', and then she swapped guitar to a Rickenbacker called Colin to perform Bread's 'If'. The audience responded wholeheartedly. Her final two numbers were a bluesy 'Voices In My Heart' and the Celtic sounding 'Magick Again'. It was only a thirty minute set, but it was deservedly very well received by the audience and strongly applauded.

The lights dimmed and Beth Hart and her band entered the stage to perform the emotional ballad 'Tell Her You Belong To Me', with an amazing guitar solo by Jon Nichols. Then Hart kicked off her boots and sang the rousing Gospel tinged 'Saved'. She knelt in front of the drum riser and sat on the front of the stage, obviously enjoying herself. A sultry 'If I Tell You I Love You', written by Melody Gardot, was followed by 'Bad Woman Blues' and 'Love Is A Lie' with Hart jumping around the stage and singing her soul out.

Hart moved to piano and sang 'Jazz Man' which had a great piano solo. She then talked to the audience about her favourite guitarists before breaking into the atmospheric 'Rub Me For Luck' that showcased her amazing vocal range. 'Baddest Blues' was followed by a very emotional 'Sister Heroine' which had her in tears. 'Waterfalls' brought the pace back up again with the audience singing back the start of the song in reply to Hart's calls. The stage then emptied leaving just Tom Lilly the bass guitarist on a double bass and Hart on piano for 'Without Words'. At the end of the song a scaled down drum kit and stools were brought on.

This was now the setting for the rest of the concert which was performed acoustically. Hart joined the band sitting on one of the stools and started off with the excellent 'Sugar Shack'. The groove laden 'Fat Man', which is all about a drug dealer, was next. Hart then picked up an acoustic guitar and the band joined her for 'Spanish Lullabies' which contained a short drum solo. She then told stories about enjoying horror films and suchlike before launching into 'The Boogie Man'. This had the whole band in laughter as the guitarist was supposed to make the spooky sounds but instead made some very odd grunts. 'Lullaby Of The Leaves' by Ella Fitzgerald was introduced by Hart praising Ella for the perfect vocal performance; she then went on to give an outstanding interpretation herself. A venomous 'Woman Down' was performed next and then 'War In My Mind' was sung with Hart pouring out her emotions over her past drug abuse. The final song was 'My California' which she told the audience was all about how she met her husband Scott and how he helped her save herself from drug abuse. At the end of it her husband rushed onto the stage and gave his wife a big cuddle. The last song was 'Leave The Light On', an autobiographical song which has some incredibly poignant lyrics. As she left the stage the audience got to their feet and gave her a thunderous applause. This resulted in the encore which had the whole band back electrically onto the stage to do an incredible version of 'I Would Rather Go Blind'; this again had the audience on their feet applauding and showing their appreciation of the great performance that had taken place over the last two hours and twenty minutes.

Beth Hart knows how to deliver a performance that is exciting, emotional and joyous to watch all at the same time and it was an absolute thrill to have witnessed it.
