With so many Power Metal bands seeming to plop out of the same "entertaining but, y'know..." mould, a new album from Norwegian speed merchants Guardians Of Time is a nicely timed distraction and one that had me bouncing around the room playing awesome air guitar. Admittedly, it was soon followed by screams of "Ohh! Me back!" and a nice sit down for a cup of tea, but Guardians Of Time are the type of Power Metal group that have a knack for reminding you why you like this style of music in the first place.

Like many, my love of fast Melodic Metal started way back with Helloween, and if I'm honest, they remain the standard-bearers for this sort of thing, at least until they got weird and a bit crap anyway. To make an awesome Power Metal album, it seems you need a high-pitched singer, a fast as buggery guitarist and a drummer with what seems like six arms. Of course, you'll also require a bassist – never forget the bassist as they get all snarky.

Guardians Of Time have all the required ingredients. Front-man Bernt Fjellestad possesses a fine set of pipes indeed, although I'll admit it took me a little while to fully appreciate his almost-screaming (at times) style of singing, but I'm right with the program now. Guitarist Paul Olsen is a marvel himself, crafting and playing some brilliant solos, and it's all backed up by Jan Will Aaraas' thunderous, fast drumming.

The powerful title track and the subsequent Helloween-esque 'Raise The Eagle' are all it will take to fall in love with this album; it's all very melodic yet very heavy, and there's nothing here to criticise. The only real misstep is 'Valhalla Awaits' which is ruined by having ex-Immortal vocalist Abbath shout through the chorus; it's a shame as otherwise, the song is great. A much smarter guest vocalist move was to have Tim "Ripper" Owens appear on 'As I Burn' because his higher-register complements Fjellestad nicely, rather than fighting against him.

'Tearing Up The World' is easily Guardians Of Time's best album so far and one that will no doubt take pride of place atop many Power Metal fan's year-end charts. It's always nice to see Norwegian metallers more interested in great music than desecrating churches and grunting about Satan.
