Buckcherry / Hoobastank / Adelita's Way - Shepherd's Bush Empire, London (UK) - 08 January 2019

Adelita's Way are radio friendly Melodic Rock with a hint of the boy band about them. Nevertheless, apparently they have been together for eleven years and have five albums. This is not surprising given their polished and honed performance, although they are relatively little known in the UK.

Coheadliner Hoobastank are a little off my radar being Nu-Metal and no doubt the province of Kerrang magazine. My neighbour and I did note that we were definitely missing a few guitar solos, although it's fair to say Hoobastank clearly had their own posse of fans in the audience and inspired a number of moshes encircling the floor. It was a nineties nostalgia trip and boy did the audience seem to enjoy it, the singer Douglas Robb commenting on all the big smiles. I have also never seen so many complete pints of beer thrown into the air at any one gig. Robb also said he'll have what the fans are having, picking up on the vibe. If you were here to see Hoobastank you did not go away disappointed unless you wanted a performance without backing tapes.

I was, however, there for Buckcherry who did top off the cake beautifully tonight. Vocalist Josh Todd was at pains to point out this is authentic live Rock 'n' Roll with no tapes and it seemed that, having been on tour for several weeks, Todd's voice was not up to full capacity; whether he had a cold (along with half of the UK at the moment) or simply had been overdoing the singing, it didn't matter because they were still super charismatic and delivered a supercool show. I could have watched them do the synchronised slide all night.

Starting out with the Nine Inch Nails cover from the new album which I love, they progressed to older hit 'It's A Party' before raising the energy with crowd pleaser 'Lit Up', moving to their parody of 'I Love It' by Icona Pop, that is 'Say Fuck it' in Buckcherry speak.

Buckcherry Live

Todd then kept most of the women in the audience happy and possibly some of the men by removing his shirt to reveal his unmistakeable abs. Distracting though a semi naked Josh Todd is, this did not stop me noticing how the title-track from the new album 'Warpaint' sounds like a Buckcherry classic and fitted right into the set. Their big ballad 'Sorry' provided a change of pace, with Todd commenting how hard it is to commit and stay faithful to a long-term relationship these days. It was then back into the new album with single 'Bent' which once again definitely more than washed its face in the set.

Without a formal encore it was straight into classics 'Gluttony' and 'Crazy Bitch', although the band teased the audience by saying there's only one more song and playing a bit of Eddie Money's 'Two Tickets to Paradise' before giving in to play their biggest hit. Always good value for money and fascinating to watch, Buckcherry got my vote tonight.
