File under boring.

I remember Sonic Syndicate as a band that packed some pretty sweet melody in with power and alternating shouty/non shouty vocals. Not necessarily my favourite band, but one that made you take notice of what they were doing due to the sheer energy and lust for life they put out. That was then, and after the departure of band members like Swedish rats fleeing a sinking ship, what's left is a pale imitation of what went before.

So if you're a fan of the band already and have wondered why everyone seems to be losing their minds over this album, it's purely due to a change in direction. Basically, this isn't the SS you're looking for. Gone is the Metalcore aggression and in comes an album of synthesizer Pop Rock, with melodies, no shouting and the sort of songs that Daughtry or Biffy Clyro would throw away as "a bit bland". This is the main problem here, as I like Daughtry and that sort of light soulful Rock, but the tracks here just go in one ear and out of the other, leaving a pleasant but forgettable aroma.

Nathan J Biggs has a decent voice and can carry a tune, but there's just precious little passion conveyed throughout and with no one to bounce off, he has trouble selling whatever message he has. If you want to know how soul destroying this can be, I can tell you that 'Russian Roulette' would suit Nickelback down to the ground, and not even as one of their better songs.

Okay, so this has been a harsh review, but deservedly so, as this piece of run of the mill Hipster Rock should never have been allowed to be released under the SS name. If the band has changed that much, just do the decent thing and start a new band with your new sound. People who don't like Sonic Syndicate will avoid this because of the name, and people who do like them will just be annoyed, so there's really no winners here. File under boring.
